Ugale Secondary school is a public secondary school located in the north- west part of the country Latvia, not far from the coasts of the Baltic Sea.
The area where our school is located in is called region Ventspils. School is attended by about 235 students aged from 7 to 18. The staff includes 32 people. Ugale Secondary school is one of two secondary schools located in our region and this school plays an important role in the social life of most of the families in the area.
Our school offers many different subjects, including IT, sciences, language, social health and cultural studies.
Quite big number of students come from low- income families, unemployment has increased in this region recently. Local economy generally is based on farming and some timber work. People have to travel long distances to search for a job. There are a lot of single families where one of the parent has moved to the UK or Ireland, there they have found a job, earned money sent to family helps children to survive here.
Our students are highly motivated and willing to cope with the challenges.
Some years ago our school participated in a Comenius project. When it was finished we got an invitation to participate in an International student camp in Norway. The main goal of the activities arranged there, was to make all students understand why people immigrate and estimate positively the presence of immigrants in their own countries. That was beginning how to make our students be aware of migration and racism.
Our students study history and geography, during these classes, teachers arrange different activities on the issue mentioned above ( meeting with people who had emigrated and now have arrived back to the country, photo displays, quizzes ).
Communication in foreign languages is also one of key competences of the Latvian curriculum. Sharing the ideas and opinions on the issue of the project, definitely will help our students in improvement of their language skills, widen their horizons, they will be able to get acquainted with the culture of the countries participating in the project.
Our school also provides students with different after school activities, like different clubs (singing, dancing, choir and etc. ).
Our school’s staff is very experienced and reliable, we are open to new ideas and challenges. Working together we will collaborate, be able to share our point of with the colleagues from the other countries.
